Gene & Peggy Fortier First Generation Scholarship in Business

Many know Gene Fortier as a State Farm Insurance agent in the Lafayette community. What many may not know, is Gene’s loyalty and passion for the University. When asked what inspired the Fortier’s to establish an endowment with UL Lafayette, Gene spoke of a time when the oil slump in the 1980’s brought hardship and depression to the Lafayette community. Gene vividly remembers this hardship and states that many were hanging on by a thread. As community members seemed to be drowning in a sea of misfortune, he remembers the beacon of hope and salvation: The University. A phenomenal asset to the community, Gene describes UL Lafayette as a bastion of opportunity. In hopes of continuing UL Lafayette’s legacy, the Fortier’s established a first generation scholarship in business. Matched by State Farm, the Moody Family Matching Fund, followed by the Louisiana State Board of Regents Support Fund, the Gene and Peggy Fortier Endowed First Generation Scholarship will benefit a first generation college student in the B. I. Moody III College of Business Administration. Gene states, “This is what it means to have your cake and eat it too.” The Fortier’s feel fortunate to be “living the dream” and desire to pay it forward. Gene Fortier is a current trustee of the UL Lafayette Foundation. Through the years, he and Peggy have also supported the RCAF Golf Capital Campaign, Ragin’ Cajuns Athletics, UL Foundation Honor Roll, and the Alumni Association. Mr. Fortier was honored as a Hall of Honor Inductee at the 2016 Distinguished Donors reception.
