Lafayette Geological Society Michael O’Brien Memorial Field Camp Support Fund

Michael Patrick O’Brien passed away June 7, 2013 at the age of 25. Beloved son of Daniel and Janet O’Brien, Michael was also a brother, nephew and friend. He was a graduate of Brother Martin High School and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Geology at Louisiana State University (LSU). Brian was a Masters in Geology candidate at UL Lafayette when he passed away. His life brought joy to the hearts of many. Established this year, the School of Geosciences at UL Lafayette and the Lafayette Geological Society (LGS) established the Lafayette Geological Society Michael O’Brien Memorial Field Camp Support Fund to honor the memory of Michael. LGS indirectly traces its history back to the founding of the South Louisiana Geological Society in Lake Charles, Louisiana, late in 1934. The Society was incorporated in 1965 and now boasts over 400 members. LGS is most proud of its publications relative to the science of geology and its assistance to the students and faculty of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The Society has previously endowed scholarships honoring Joe Battle and former UL Lafayette Professor William R. Paine.
