Richard G. Neiheisel Professorship in History

A native of Boulder, Colorado, Richard G. Neiheisel earned his degrees from the University of Colorado. In his junior year of undergraduate studies, Neiheisel was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and, after graduating with a 4.0 grade point average, immediately entered graduate school. Neiheisel began his academic career at UL Lafayette (USL) in 1962 teaching Modern and Ancient European History as well as American and Russian History. Richard Neiheisel was well read and enjoyed great books as well as music, playing the piano, Broadway shows, photography, and traveling. He was a great supporter of Community Concerts, Chorale Acadienne, and the Fine Arts Association (later known as Performing Arts Society of Acadiana or PASA). After his death, Neiheisel’s wife Dr. Mary B. Neiheisel established an endowed award in his memory with contributions from friends and relatives. The professorship is Neiheisel’s third legacy as he established the Neiheisel/Phi Beta Kappa Award in 1987 and in 1988, Dr. Mary B. Neiheisel established the Richard G. Neiheisel & Mary B. Neiheisel Dissertation Award for Ph.D. students in Liberal Arts, Education, Sciences and Engineering. Upon matching by the Louisiana State Board of Regents Support Fund, the Richard G. Neiheisel Professorship in History, will provide UL Lafayette history professors funding support in perpetuity and pay tribute to a great historian. Dr. Mary B. Neiheisel joined the UL Lafayette (USL) faculty in 1966 as a professor in the College of Nursing and Allied Health Profession. She joined the graduate faculty in 1988 and was appointed as the first Graduate Nursing Coordinator.
